To provide dentists a sturdy foundational knowledge of sleep and sleep disordered breathing that enables them to identify and manage sleep disordered breathing in their dental patients.

To alert the dental and medical profession of the rampant epidemic of sleep disordered breathing and the health risks posed by its far-reaching implications.

To train dentists in the objective, diagnostic and scientifically-sound protocol created by Health Technology, Ltd. and intended specifically for the dental identification and management of sleep disordered breathing.

To assure the dental and medical communities, as well as the public at large, of the validity of said protocol and its central role in the dental identification and management of sleep disordered breathing.

Educational Goals

Upon completion of each course listed below, participants should have an understanding of all aspects falling under each course heading:

Introduction to Sleep: history of sleep; REM; circadian rhythm; sleep deprivation; sleep architecture; polysomnography; critical asessment of sleep

Sleep Disorders & Sleep Disordered Breathing: parasomnias; insomnias; hypersomnias; circadian disorders; snoring; upper airway resistance syndrome; obstructive sleep apnea

Airway Assessment: MRI; lateral cephalometric x-ray; CT scan; acoustic reflection technology (rhinometry and pharyngometry)

Oral Appliance Therapy: history; types of appliances; commonly used appliances; pros and cons of oral appliance therapy and specific appliances

Ambulatory Sleep Study: scientific basis; comparison with polysomnography; commonly used ambulatory sleep studies; pros and cons of ambulatory sleep studies and specific designs

Risk Factors & Implications: Obesity; age; Menopause; Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome; Insulin resistance; impaired glucose metabolism and endocrine function; growth retardation of fetus; cardiovascular disease; vascular headaches; Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder; Alzheimer's Disease, erectile dysfunction; sexual dysfunction

Pediatrics: children's sleep architecture; pediatric sleep disorders; rates of sleep and sleep disordered breathing problems; bedtime resistance; nightwakings; rhytmic movement disorders; risk factors; symptoms; bruxism; Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder; physical examination; oral examination; nasal examination; radiograph; polysomnography; management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in children
